Everyone has a different business approach when they need to manage or to start a new online business. You know that everything starts with the domain name. I think that choosing a domain name is a key step that paves the way any dot-com business goes! It may be the way to fast success, it may be a road to nowhere or it can bring online a decent but not popular web site.
It is really important so users and Seacrh engines to define your web site as important one within the first months after its birth. Otherwise you will loose months and even years to wait for high Search Engine rank.
Let’s say you have set your company name as your primary domain name. Then you will have to decide what to do. To make the company’s name (the domain name) popular or to try to build your web site popularity on some keywords or phrases you define as important. So you have a choice which way to go!
When you register a domain name based on keywords or phrases then you don’t have a choice. You are bound to market the keyword combination you have put as a domain name. Let’s say your domain name is all-cheap-american-web-hosting-companies.com.
The main advantage of having this one above registered is that you’ll probably get a good rank on this phrase or for similar keywords and combinations. But you can not be sure you’ll get a good SE rank since tons of web sites bargain on those keywords and combinations and you need to compete them.
You can see that webhosting.com or hosting.com are not among top 10 in Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Ask.com on search term “web hosting”. An exception is the #1 rank for hosting.com in Google and their good position in Alta Vista and Ask.com for the keyword “hosting”.
Webhosting.com and Hosting.com are top ranked only in MSN on both “web hosting” and “hosting” search terms.
Both web sites are old enough, popular and have thousands of customers. All that did not make them all-times-number-one in the Search Engines.
So my advice not to go for keyword based domain name. it is better to choose an unique site name preferably the same as the name of your business! This will bring the following advantages
– An unique web site brand that no one has it
– It will be very easy for anyone to remember it
– Search Engines will define your web site and the domain name as “friendly” ones
– It will be easy for you to implement content based web site marketing strategy
In conclusion, I can suggest you to to spend more time drafting your online business. Once you have clear goals, starting from the domain name and finishing with the service and product support, you’ll be able to handle the things much better!
